Hot As

Yesterday Adelaide was the hottest city in the world.

Let's just think about that for a second...the world is a really big place!  I suppose it probably helps that the majority of land mass is experiencing winter on the other side of the equator, but still, being anything "the most in the world" is mind-blowing to me!

At 46 degrees C (115 F) I can say that it was honestly the hottest day I have ever lived through.

So how did we cope?

We trapped ourselves inside with the AC running, instigated a "clothing optional" mandate for anyone under 6, and invited a group of toddlers over for a "beat the heat" party!  Usually our "mum's group" meets at the library for story time, then we head over to a cafe with a kid-friendly sandpit.  But instead of braving the heat we hunkered down in our rumpass room with glasses of iced coffee and chunks of watermelon.  A half-dozen mums sat on the floor in a circle while the toddlers did an excellent job sharing toys and playing games and jumping on my bed.

And it should have been a loud, chaotic mess.  It should have been all screaming and toddlers struggling with sharing and drinks getting spilled...

But instead it was peaceful.

It was not having to worry about chasing after the toddler when he decides to run through the library aisles instead of sit and listen to the nice story. And it was a lounge room, kept dark and quiet and cool, converted into a napping room for a couple of new babies.  And a friends toddler gazing at me with his big, soulful eyes with a silent question, "can I?" as he watched others climb up to jump on my bed.  It was simply catching up with a group of really awesome friends, and their pretty awesome kids.

So our hottest day ever was actually pretty cool.

So cheers for that, Adelaide.
